| The ideas behind Kristen Carter's handmade flamework art glass jewelry (also known as lampwork glass beads) occured as a result of the artist's numerous trips to Italy. "The glass on display over there couldn't help but inspire me. All of my pieces start with glass rods imported from Italy. I then form the glass into beads using a 1700 degree torch. I sometimes use 14 kt gold leaf encased inside the glass or placed on the outside of the bead. I also add layers of different colors to the base glass bead for random splashes of color. In my beach scenes, the glass resembles a painted picture. All of my pieces are then placed in a digitally-controlled kiln for 24 hours, thereby increasing the strength of the glass."
